While I was born in America, I'm of Nigerian descent. I haven't been to Nigeria because a plane ticket is almost $2,000 for no reason. In all actuality, I haven't been to Nigeria because of political reasons and the fact that Nigeria isn't in a good state because of the government.
Nigeria has gone through so much turmoil, bloodshed, and corruption since its creation in the 1800's. Great Britain annexed what is now Lagos in 1861; the colony was made into a single entity in 1914. Almost everything about the origin of Nigeria is man-made. The country's border was traced by Europe; even the name "Nigeria" was made by a British woman. Nigeria gained its independence on October 1st, 1960. While it's great that Nigeria is an independent country, Great Britain left Nigeria with a colonized mindset, which still exists today.
Nigeria is currently home to over 300 tribes. There are three major tribes that reside in Nigeria: Yoruba, Hausa-Fulani, and Igbo. My family and I are Igbo people. One of the biggest problems that Nigeria suffers from is tribalism. Tribalism was one of the reasons why Nigeria had a civil war, with a part of the country seceding and creating Biafra. Biafra was short-lived, lasting for only three years (1967-1970). If you'd to learn more about Biafra, please click here.
